Day 5

Day 5: Michigan; Paradise to Sault Saint Marie, Mi Aug 31 51 miles (+ 7 miles into the Sault)

Leaving Paradise, we biked the beautiful shoreline on the Curley Lewis Highway (Lake Superior Lakeshore/Shoreline Road) in the Hiawatha National Forest along Whitefish Bay. This was one of the most beautiful shoreline roads we biked on the whole trip. We stopped at the Point Iroquois Light House built in 1870, where we climbed the steps of the lighthouse to the top of the 65 foot high tower and had a grand view of the Lake. There were many hiking trails in this area along Lake Superior. We continued thru Brimley State Park on  W 6 Mile Road to Highway 75. Past the intersection of 75, we started biking North to the Sault, but it was extremely windy, which made it hard to handle the bikes, so we packed up the bikes and drove the few miles on to Sault Ste Marie.  There was a great deal of fast traffic on Highway 75, so we would have biked the 7 miles to the Sault on the S Mackinac Trail (Co Rd 63) just East of Highway 75, but the wind was too much to fight. We spent our fifth night in the American Soo at the Best Western Travel Lodge having a great meal in Abners after a wonderful day of riding all along Lake Superior.
