Bicycle Around Lake Superior!

Day 13 & 14: Minnesota; Silver Bay to
Duluth - Sept
8 & 9; 71 miles
From Silver Bay, we biked to Beaver Bay "the oldest community on the North Shore". In Beaver Bay, we got on the Gitchi-Gami Minnesota State Park bike-hike path that runs 14 miles to the Gooseberry Falls State Park. There are plans to extend this awesome off road path for 86 miles from Grand Marais to Two Harbors! Can't wait to go back to ride that bike-hike path when it is completed! Although the bike path on the road side from Silver Bay to Duluth was good and plenty wide. We stopped at the Split Rock Light House and took a tour of the beautiful grounds there; awesome views of Lake Superior! We had head winds nearly this whole day. From Two Harbors, we rode on the old Scenic Highway 61, which becomes the North Shore Road/Drive along the Lake shore on into Duluth. There was a good wide bike path until we got to the city of Duluth where the bike path we were on disappeared; so we got off the bikes on Brighton Beach Road before getting onto the busy Duluth streets. We took a rest day to shop the Mall and of course the local bike shops! We also visited the offices of the Lake Superior Magazine and guide book and had our picture taken with the editor, Konnie LeMay. We let her know that Nipigon had motels so they could add that info to their next printing of the Lake Superior Guide Book. We promised to send her a letter about our trip. We stayed at the Canal Park Comfort Inn in Duluth.
