Grand Marais to Paradise Aug 30 76 miles +
10 miles up to Whitefish Point
The next day, we rode along the Lake thru Muskallonge Lake State Park, Deer Park then South. Part of this road was dirt. About mid morning, we made a stop at Oswald's Big Bear Ranch; we also passed by the Two Hearted River area, known for the famous short story that author Ernest Hemingway wrote called "Big Two Hearted River". We made our lunch break stop and hike at Taquamenon Falls State Park. The temp gauge on Connie's bike odometer said 99 degrees when we returned to our bikes! (it cooled down to 92 deg when we got moving on the road.) From the Falls we biked to Whitefish Point and visited the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum & Bird Conservancy. From the sand beach At Whitefish Point, we could see across the lake to what appeared to be huge mountains in Canada!!! Oh wow, just what have we gotten ourselves into here with all those mountains, Connie thought!! (Julie and Mary have made bicycle trips through the big mountains out West, so the thought of these "little hills" as Julie called them was not much of a worry for them!) We spent our fourth night in Paradise at Curleys Motel and gave our bikes a through cleaning there. (Note, if you plan on washing your bike on your trips, bring rags and a bucket!) Connie, who has only used off road mountain bikes before this trip, thought cleaning a bike other than the chain & gears, was akin to washing vegetables in a garden! The Paradise Food store in Paradise had some great animal pictures on the wall taken from someone's local automatic night cam; they included pictures of a big beautiful black panther!
