     Mary T. Chrisinske of Munith, MI, age 75, died Wednesday Dec. 31, 2003, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. 
     Funeral services were conducted on Saturday Jan. 3, 2004, at St. Cornelius and Cyprian Catholic Church with Rev Fr. Michael A. Petroski presiding. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Oakland Hospice, St. Cornelius and Cyprian Catholic Church or American Lung Association. Arrangements were made by Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge, MI.

Glenn W. Wilson

     Glenn W. Wilson, age 59 of Escondido, CA, and former Baraga resident died on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at his home after a long battle with cancer. 
     A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Baraga. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.

Lloyd Francis "Victor" Hugo

     Lloyd Francis "Victor" Hugo, age 61, of Huron, OH, died on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital in Norwalk, OH.
     A memorial service will be held in the spring. Burial will be in the Assinins Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.

Helen F. Sliger

     Helen F. Sliger, 73, of Covington, died on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L’Anse where she had been a patient for three days. 
     Funeral services for Sliger were held on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor Leon Linquist officiating. Interment will take place in the Covington Cemetery in the Spring. The Covington VFW Post 8945 Auxiliary conducted a memorial service. Homer D. Elmblad

     Homer D. Elmblad, 85, of Iowa City, IA. and summer resident of L’Anse died on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003 in the loving arms of his daughter.

Dorothy M. (Adams) Christo

     Dorothy M. (Adams) Christo, 73, a former L’Anse resident, died on Dec. 26, 2003, following a 20 year struggle with Huntington’s Disease.
A funeral service was held Dec. 30, 2003, at McCurdy’s Funeral Home in Council Bluffs, IA. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Missouri Valley, IA.

Lillian E. Rock

     Longtime Ely Township resident and business woman, Lillian E. Rock, 92, Ishpeming, died on Dec. 24, 2003, at Munising Memorial Hospital. 
     Funeral services were held on Dec. 30, 2003, at Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, Ishpeming, Rev. Jeanette Ruusi and Rev. Alan McCall officiated. Internment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Joseph Nicholas Pertile

     Joseph Nicholas Pertile, 52, of 302 Lakewood Lane, Harvey, died on Dec. 22, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital. 
     A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 27, 2003 at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick officiating. Burial took place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

     Rita Agatha Johnson, age 86 of Lake Orion, MI, formerly of Houghton, died on Dec. 18, 2003.

     Ruth W. Cluka, 89, of Milwaukee, WI, died Dec. 4, 2003.

     In the early morning hours of Dec. 22, 2003, Howard E. Shaffer died ending years of pain and suffering to begin a life of joy and peace.

     Julia Heltunen, 90, formerly of Aura, died on Dec. 20, 2003, at Whitehall Health Care Center, Novi, MI.

     Christopher A. Edwards, age 21 of L’Anse died on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003 as a result of an automobile accident in Baraga.

     Ada I. Tervo, 86, a former resident of Arnheim, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 2, 2003, at Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming where she has been a resident patient since Sept. 25, 2003.
     Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Chassell Apostolic Lutheran Church with Don Holombo and Paul Marin officiating. Burial was in the Keweenaw Bay Cemetery.

     Myrtle E. Gauthier, age 85 of Baraga died on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Marquette General Hospital following a short term illness.

Joseph A. Velmer Sr

     Joseph A. Velmer Sr., 56 of L'Anse died unexpectedly at Baraga County Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 from an apparent heart attack. 
     A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L'Anse, with Father Greg Heikkala, celebrant. Spring interment will take place in L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.

     Margaret O. Snyder, 85, of Skanee, died on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 ,at her residence in Skanee.

Aatos “Bill” Syrjala

     Aatos “Bill” Syrjala, age 85, formerly of Covington died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, where he has been a resident for the past five years.

     Roy C. Humphrey, age 86 of Covington died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Covington Rest Home. There will be no visitation or funeral services. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Edward Jarvey

     Howard Edward Jarvey, 74, of Harbor Tower Apartments in Escanaba, died on Nov. 24, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. 
     A memorial gathering was held on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at the VFW Club in L’Anse. Memorials can be directed to the Baraga County Little League. The Anderson Funeral Home of Escanaba and Gladstone assisted the family.

Dean F. Hoornstra

     Dean F. Hoornstra, formerly of L’Anse, died on Nov. 24, 2003, in Coldwater, MI. Hoornstra and his family had lived in L’Anse for many years. Hoornstra died on his 57th birthday.
     A funeral service was conducted at Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater with Terry Siler officiating. Burial took place in Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Good Samaritan Hospice.

     Mary L. Crotty, 69, of Baraga, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a short illness. 
     A memorial service for Crotty was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Baraga with Judy Mattson officiating.      Beverly M. Fahlgren, 75, of Greenhill Manor, L’Anse, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a two-week illness.

     Marion T. Neibauer, 87, of L’Anse died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit following a lengthy illness.

Keith “K.C.” Moore

     Keith “K.C.” Moore, 39, of Allenville, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at Northern Michigan Hospital after a 19 month battle with cancer.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Straits Evangelical Free Church, St. Ignace, with Pastor Tom Penner officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, St. Ignace. Pallbearers were Tim Finnegan, Dan Maki, Gary Morrison, Ryan Hukill, Jim Parker and Amos Wittenmier.

Martha Duennerman

     Martha Elvi (Ekdahl) Duennerman, 68, died on Nov. 22, 2003, at the Tucson Medical Center Hospice in Tucson, AX. Duennerman was born in Baraga on Nov. 8, 1935.
     Memorial services will be held at Brings Mortuary Broadway Chapel at 6910 E. Broadway Boulevard in Tuscon.

Elsie W. Norback

     Elsie W. Norback, age 86, of Watton passed away on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at Alpena General Hospital in Alpena, MI. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse.

Bertha T. Kangas

     Bertha T. Kangas, 88, a resident of Painesdale, died peacefully at home on Friday, Nov. 14, 2003. 
     Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the Painesdale Apostolic Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jay Weidner officiating.      Carlton E. Patterson, age 71 of Pequaming died suddenly on Monday, Nov. 17, 2003 at his home.

     Eileen Moore, age 78, of Browns-town Township, and formerly of Taylor, MI, died on Oct. 26, 2003. She was raised in L’Anse. 
A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection took place on Oct. 28, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Trenton, MI.  The Voran Funeral Home, Taylor, assisted with arrangements. 

Margaret Doris (Sands) Molloy

    Margaret Doris (Sands) Molloy was born Jan. 29, 1914, in L’Anse, died peacefully on Nov. 1, 2003.
    She was honored with a Funeral Mass on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at St. Hugo Catholic Church of Bloomfield Hills. 
    A memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L’Anse on Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Lloyd A. Maki

     Lloyd A. Maki, died on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at Froedtert Hospital from injuries due to an industrial accident. 
     Funeral services for Maki were held on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Proko Funeral Home 5111-60th St. at 11 a.m. with full Military Honors following. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, the SICU Unit of the Trauma Center, West Clinic would be appreciated by the family.

Alice I. “Ozzie” Springstead

Alice I. “Ozzie” Springstead 75, of L’Anse, died at her home Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003. .

     Reino J. Hakala, 85, a former resident of Pelkie, died on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at his home in Henry Ford Village in Dearborn, MI following a lengthy illness.
     Funeral services were held Monday at the Thayer-Rock Funeral Home in Farmington, MI, with graveside services were held Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Pelkie Cemetery, with Rev.      Juanita “Donna” Johnson, age 82 of L’Anse, died on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Frances Stupak

     Surrounded by family, Frances Stupak, 79, died early on Sunday morning, Oct. 26, 2003, at her home in East Lansing, MI. Stupak suffered from a rare form of lung cancer and died after a lengthy illness, said her son, Congressman Bart Stupak. Her husband Frank Stupak Sr. predeceased her in 1987.
     A mass of Christian burial was held at 6 p.m. EST Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at All Saints Catholic Church 723 Wisconsin Avenue, Gladstone, MI. Arrangements are being assisted by the Skradski- Boyce Family Funeral Homes in Gladstone.

     David Allen Walitalo, 49, of Baraga, died suddenly at his home Sunday morning, Oct. 12, 2003.

     George J. Novak, age 77 of Stambaugh Township, died on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at his hunting camp on the Pendelton Creek, due to injuries sustained when a tree fell on him.

     Edward Kahkonen, 87, died on Sept. 29, 2003, in Phoenix, AZ, from a long-term heart condition. He is formerly from Pelkie, Detroit and Calumet. 
     He is survived by two brothers, George Kahkonen of Madison Heights, MI and Karl Kannon of Phoenix; and two sisters, Cecelia Spayd of Sun City, AZ, and Siiri Dobbins of Farmington Hills, MI. Cremation and burial took place in Phoenix.

     Foster Knox Alspaugh, 2 years, 11 months, died on March 30, 2003, following a sudden illness. He was born on April 19, 2000 to Daren Scott Alspaugh and Kimberly Baez Knox, of Georgetown, CO. 
     Alspaugh is survived by several local relatives. Paternal grandparents are Ann and Fred Alspaugh, summer residents of Keweenaw Bay. Maternal grandparents are Rene Knox and John Knox of Lake Pleasant, NY. Aunts and uncles include Jack and Kathy Weber of Palmer, Jerry and Connie Lytikai-nen of L’Anse, and Ruth and Clyde Baker of Keweenaw Bay and Mon-arch Beach, CA. Foster also leaves his younger sister, Chloe Rose Alspaugh. 
     The family provided the following obituary: “Foster Knox Alspaugh was here on earth for just a brief time. He was born on April 19, 2000, and died on March 30, 2003. During that time he had a huge impact on so many people’s lives. He brightened a room just be being there. He made people want children. If you knew Foster you were among the lucky ones.
     “He hit the ground running and left in a hurry, generating love and laughter all the way. Foster sparkled like a snowman in the sun, and made the world a better place because he was here.
     “He is on a train to paradise, and will be missed by many; especially his mother Kimberly Baez Knox, his father, Daren Scott Alspaugh, and his little sister, Chloe Rose Alspaugh. Thank you Foster for being a part of our lives and sparkling like the shining star you are.”

Donald R. Whetung

     Donald R. Whetung, 80, Green-leaf, died on Tuesday morning, March 25, 2003. 
     The West Mason Malcore Funeral Home handled funeral arrangements. A service was conducted by Rev. Thomas Farrell. Burial was in Fort Howard Cemetery.      Laverne M. Chappell died at home in Marquette on March 5, 2003. She was born on June 11, 1936, in Michigamme.

     David Wayne (Jake) Maki, 43, a resident of Pine City, MN, died on Feb. 15, 2003, as the result of an automobile accident.

     Well-known Baraga County resident, Mary J. Konstenius, (Jackie), age 79, died Feb. 5, 2003, in Macon, GA, after suffering a heart attack. 
The family received visitors at its home in Baraga on Sunday, Feb. 9, and a memorial service was held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Baraga Monday, Feb. 10, 2003.
